Song of the Week (Week of October 17, 2010)

This week in particular I have been really into Robyn, in case you couldn't tell form my last couple of posts. So it was only fitting that I picked one of her songs as the Song of the Week. I chose "Dancing On My Own," the first single from her "Body Talk Part 1" album that was released earlier this year.

As the first official single since the release of her brilliant "Robyn" album, "Dancing On My Own" picks up right where "With Every Heartbeat," one of her biggest hits from that album, left off. It has all the same feelings of heartbreak, desperation and frustration that its predecessor has, and also does it all atop an infectious electro-pop beat.

"Dancing On My Own," however, goes even one step further. While Robyn sings of a failed love in "Every Heartbeat," "Dancing On My Own" is about watching someone you're in love with be with another person as you are helpless to do anything about it. She stands in the corner watching him kiss her, dancing on her own. It is truly heartbreaking, but anyone who has ever watched someone they love being with another person right in front of their eyes can truly feel her painful emotions.

In an interview with Gaydar Nation, Robyn explained why the same subjects, heartbreak and being on the outside, keep popping up in her songs. "Because that's how life is," she said. "I mean, isn't that how we all feel? Those are the things that everybody – or a lot of people, at least – think about. That's what pop music is supposed to be doing – talking about those everlasting issues like love, being on the outside and feeling like you want to dance." And it's because she sings about these subjects so truthfully why I love her and her music so much. Enjoy!

Somebody said you got a new friend
Does she love you better than I can
There's a big black sky over my town
I know where you at, I bet she's around
Yeah I know it's stupid
But I just got to see it for myself

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her (Oooh)
I'm right over here, why can't you see me (Oooh)
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home (Uuuh)
I keep dancing on my own
(I keep dancing on my own)

I'm just gonna dance all night
I'm all messed up, I'm so out of line
Stilettos and broken bottles
I'm spinning around in circles

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her (Oooh)
I'm right over here, why can't you see me (Oooh)
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home (Uuuh)
I keep dancing on my own
(I keep dancing on my own)

So far away, but still so near
The lights go on, the music dies
But you don't see me, standing here
I just came to say goodbye

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her (Oooh)
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home (Uuuh)
I keep dancing on my own
(I keep dancing on my own)

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her (Oooh)
I'm right over here, why can't you see me (Oooh)
I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home (Uuuh)
I keep dancing on my own
(I keep dancing on my own)
(I keep dancing on my own)
