Song of the Week (Week of June 19, 2011)

In honor of seeing Florence + The Machine in concert earlier this week, I chose "Heavy In Your Arms" as this week's Song of the week. This song was originally recorded for "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Soundtrack" and then was included on the re-released edition of "Lungs" as well as the "Lungs: The B-Sides" albums. I actually didn't like this song very much at first, but it's definitely grown on me (especially after hearing Florence's incredible vocals on it live). It's a very haunting song and very different a lot else out there. Enjoy!

Number 6 - Dixie Chicks

Song of the Week (Week of June 12, 2011)

For this week's Song of the Week I chose a classic Madonna song off her debut album, "Burning Up." The song was released as a single in 1983. It's not as well known as some of her 80s songs, but it's definitely still a classic. I chose it for 2 reasons this week: first, because Britney Spears is doing a cover of the song on her upcoming Femme Fatale Tour. Her version is no where near as good as Madonna's (of course) so it kind of made me have an even greater appreciation for the original. If you want to hear it, you can do so HERE.

The other reason I chose this song is because it's Los Angeles Pride this weekend, and who better to celebrate Pride with than one of the greatest gay icons of all time? Enjoy!

Number 7 - Beyoncé

Song of the Week (Week of June 5, 2011)

You've probably never heard of Oh Land but you definitely should hear of her...which is exactly why I picked her for this week's Song of the Week. Oh Land is the stage name of Danish singer-songwriter/record producer Nanna Øland Fabricius. She released her first album "Fauna" in Denmark in 2008, but her follow-up album "Oh Land" really got her attention when it was released this year.

It served as her debut album in the U.S. and just cracked into the Billboard 200 albums chart when it was released. She appeared on a few televised U.S. shows for the first time ever around the album's release, and is now going on tour with Sia and Katy Perry (on select dates) this summer. The first single off the album, "Sun of a Gun" is perhaps her best known song, but my favorite is another track on the album called "White Nights." Enjoy!

I know, I know...I just picked a GaGa song as the Song of the Week last week. But this is still the first week since "Born This Way" was released, and the album is projected to have sold an outstanding 1.15 million copies in its first week! So I had to pick a song from the album. I chose "Heavy Metal Lover" because it's one of those songs I didn't love at first, but it's really grown on me since I first heard it. I always appreciate a song when it does that. Plus the lyrics are great. Enjoy!

Number 9 - Sia

Song of the Week (Week of May 22, 2011)

This week's Song of the Week is "Americano," from Lady GaGa's album "Born This Way," which comes out tomorrow. The song is one of my favorites on the record. It has a killer beat but also an important message. The singer herself described the song as "A big mariachi technohouse record where I am singing about immigration law and gay marriage and all sorts of things that have to do with disenfranchised communities in America."

Once again, GaGa seems to be the only pop star explicitly sticking up for the small, disenfranchised communities, especially the gay one. She sings at the beginning of the song, "I met a girl in East L.A....We fell in love but not in court." Later, she sings, "I will fight for/ I have fought for/ How I love you. /I have cried for/ I will die for/ How I care." As one of the biggest female singer in the world, singing to another female about how wrong it is that they can't marry or be together because of unfair immigration laws is huge. Enjoy!

Lady GaGa's "Born This Way": A Track By Track Review

Lady GaGa's third album, the much anticipated "Born This Way," will be released worldwide on May 23rd. The Countdown to "Born This Way" Continues!

Today the iTunes countdown to the release of "Born This Way" (which is exactly a week from today!) continues with the premiere of another new song from the album called "Hair." I don't like this one as much as I like any of the other songs I've heard from the album, but it's not bad at all and I can see it growing on me. Listen to the song here:


Also, Lady GaGa performed at BBC's Radio 1 Big Weekend in the UK. She did a whole set but one of the highlights for me as well as many other fans was here very touching acoustic version of "The Edge of Glory." Watch it here and enjoy!:

Song of the Week (Week of May 15, 2011)

This week's Song of the Week is "Come On Over" by Shania Twain, in honor of meeting her again this week. This song, the title track from her smash "Come On Over" album, was the 9th single released. It was written by Twain and her then-husband, "Mutt" Lange and went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2000. The album became the world's best-selling country music album and the best-selling studio album ever released by a female artist in any genre. Today, it's sold 39 million copies worldwide. Enjoy!

Number 11 - Janet Jackson

I'm On the Edge of Glory!

Ladies and gentlemen, she's done it again...today Lady GaGa released another new song from her upcoming "Born This Way" album called "The Edge of Glory"...its not necessarily the next single but she released it to iTunes today to promote the album and get people hyped up for it since its coming out in exactly 2 weeks.

The song is about is the passing of GaGa's grandfather, who died last year. She said in an interview, "My dad and I were going to say goodbye to [my grandpa] at the hospice, and I got out a big thing of agave tequila and my dad sat next to me at the piano and we started doing shots back and forth, and I wrote The Edge of Glory on the piano and my dad and I cried. The song's about your last moment on earth, the moment of truth; the edge of glory is that moment right before you leave the earth. So that song can be played on the piano, but it's actually set to this giant, huge techno rock Springsteen-esque dance beat... It's f**king beautiful." Indeed it is. The song also features a saxophone solo from Bruce Springsteen's sideman Clarence Clemons. Enjoy!

Song of the Week (Week of May 8, 2011)

This week's Song of the Week is "E.T." by Katy Perry. I'm not a huge Katy Perry fan. When she first came out with "Ur So Gay" and "I Kissed A Girl," I thought she was going to be a lot more edgy and interesting than she turned out to be. She has a good voice, but she struggles singing her songs live because I truly believe she shouldn't be a pop star. If she made more songs like "Ur So Gay," I'd honestly respect her a lot more as an artist. Plus, her personality just seems a bit repellant (like how she wrote shit about GaGa, Britney AND Calvin Harris on Twitter, the latter directly and the former two indirectly).

That being said, I do believe she is a talented songwriter, and her latest single, "E.T.," which is the fourth to be released off her sophomore "Teenage Dream" album, is honestly a really good song. It's been number 1 on the Billboard charts for weeks, but I prefer the original album version as opposed to the single version that features Kanye West. It's basically the exact same song except with an additional 2 versions of Kanye West's rap.

His appearance on the song is sort of pointless and doesn't add much at all, but is just another example of a trend that's been happening lately in pop music that is frustrating me to no end: releasing a "remixed" version of a song that is the exact same as the original but just features another famous artist to help get the song to the top of the charts (i.e. Rihanna's "S&M" Remix featuring Britney Spears or Britney's "Till the World Ends" Remix featuring Nicki Minaj & Ke$sha). SO, here is the ORIGINAL ALBUM version of "E.T." Enjoy!

This week's Song of the Week is by Australian singer Sia, from the 2004 album "Colour the Small One." The song was released as a single in the UK only, where it peaked at number 85. With songs such as "Breathe Me" and "Numb" on the same album, "Colour the Small One" remains one of Sia's signature albums, spotlighting her moody pop and incredible songwriting talent. On a personal level, the song has really fit my mood of the weekend, which has been a mixture of emotions. Enjoy!

Song of the Week (Week of December 5, 2010)

This has been a crazy week and almost everyday in the car, I've enjoyed listening to "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + The Machine. Plus, the song was done in this week's episode of "Glee," AND Florence got nominated for Best New Artist at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. This is officially the second single from their debut album, "Lungs," and probably their most famous song, thanks to its inclusion in the "Eat, Pray, Love" advertisement. It's a great song, so enjoy!
