Top 12 Female Pop Artists - Number 11: Janet Jackson

Every Saturday for the next 12 weeks I decided to count down my top 12 female pop artists. After each cut will be a short explanation of why they made the list and their discographies. There will also be audio of some of my favorite songs to listen to, and video of some of their music videos and live performances that I like the most. Give the page time to load after you click "Read More" because all the audio and video may cause it to take awhile.

Some of these songs or video may have already been posted in other entries, but they will be reposted for the countdown purposes if they are some of favorites. (And of course the number of songs and videos posted will depend on how new the artist is...a newer artist will have far fewer than one who's been around for years). This week we the countdown continues with:

Number 11 - Janet Jackson

I've been a Janet Jackson fan for awhile now, but honestly, she just recently got knocked down a few pegs on my list. If I had done this countdown a few months ago, she would have definitely been in the top 10. However, I just saw her Number Ones: Up Close & Personal Tour at the end of April, and I was very disappointed. I know that the point of the tour was that it was supposed to be more intimate with fewer special effects and elaborate sets and smaller venues. That's all fine. I just think she needs to keep it consistent night to night.

She played 3 nights at the Gibson Amphitheatre (A Thursday, Friday and Saturday night). I read the LA Times' review for the first night (which happened to be the night they and the rest of the press were there). They wrote, "The 44-year-old provided a no-frills show that was light on costume changes (only three)...it should be noted that she sang live for the nearly two-hour show, a rarity in today’s pop music...From smashes such as 'Control,' 'Scream,' 'Escapade,' 'All For You' and 'Together Again' to more obscure hits 'The Best Things in Life Are Free' and 'Diamonds,' Jackson managed to offer nearly 30 of her 35 No. 1 singles...",. You can read the rest of the review HERE. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2011/04/janet-jackson-launches-three-date-stint-at-gibson-amphitheatre-with-no-frills-hits-heavy-set.html They also showed this photo of her in one of her costumes:

Hot, right? So this is what I was expecting when I saw her on her third and last night in Los Angeles. Little did I know that I wouldn't be getting this at all. First, she did not play for nearly 2 hours. She played at best for 80 minutes. The LA Times also wrote out the set list, and she cut 5 whole songs! That's right, she sang 5 more songs on Thursday night than she did on Saturday night. They were big hits also, including All For You, which was one of 2 songs she dedicated to Los Angeles! (Every city she plays she dedicates a song or 2 for that city and plays the ENTIRE music videos for those songs before she goes onstage. And one of those songs she didn't even perform).

The worst though was that she didn't change costumes ONCE! She changed costumed 3 times for the Thursday night, and even wore that hot catsuit. But for the show I saw, she just wore a white tank top and pair of jeans the entire time! I wish I was able to go to work in my pajamas too. See!:

If Janet had worn that white tank top and jeans and did the same number of songs for every show she played, I wouldn't complain. I just felt cheated that because I chose to go see her third night instead of her first, that I then got half of the show. I think that's very disrespectful to do to her fans. She needs to put the same amount of effort into every show she does, no matter what reporters are in the audience to review her concert.

So ever since that I haven't liked her as much. That being said, I still do enjoy a lot of her music and still think she's an icon and has a lot of talent. So she still makes the list...just not as high as she would have otherwise.
